I became interested in medicine after studying tropical forest in college and realizing that I wanted more contact with people than trees. In medical school, I cared for children and adults with sickle cell disease and was inspired by the challenges and complexity of this chronic illness. I chose to train in both pediatric and adult hematology and now see both children and adults with non-malignant blood disorders. I joined Duke Health in July 2016 to direct the Adult Sickle Cell Program and focus on the care of children and adults with disorders of hemoglobin. As director of Duke’s sickle cell transition program, my practice and research focuses on treating children and adults with sickle cell disease. When I work with children, I try to focus on teaching them about their condition and how to transition successfully to living with the disease as an adult. For all patients, I focus on providing the medical, social and psychological support they need to remain healthy. My research aims to increase engagement of sickle cell patients with their own care using mobile technology. Through the use of applications, we’re hoping to help patients, specifically children, better manage their symptoms and medications. Outside of work, I have a strong interest in art. In fact, one of my undergraduate majors was biological illustration. I enjoy drawing plants, animals and people. I’ve recently started getting back into this hobby. Dr. Shah is rated as an Elite provider by MediFind in the treatment of Sickle Cell Disease. He is also highly rated in 9 other conditions, according to our data. I treat patients with non-malignant (non-cancerous) blood disorders like sickle cell disease, thalassemia, iron deficiency anemia, and immune thrombocytopenia. Several of my patients have blood disorders that have been present since birth. Others have blood disorders that they acquire later on in life due to nutritional deficiencies or autoimmune causes. I have a special focus on treating adults with sickle cell disease. I became interested in sickle cell disease because several of my family members have died from the condition, while others are thriving while living with it. I chose to become a hematologist because I want to improve care for adults with sickle cell disease and enjoy helping improve the lives of all patients with non-malignant blood disorders. I enjoy cooking plant-based, vegan foods because I believe good food is a vital part of maintaining good health and building healthy blood cells. I treat children with cancer and blood disorders, such as anemia and sickle cell disease. When families come in, there is understandably a huge amount of anxiety. I try to spend a lot of time with them and discuss what we know, what we need to find out, and how we plan to care for their children. My goal is to make it the least scary as possible for both the children and the parents/caregivers while providing the best care. Even in the setting of severe illness, interacting with children is uplifting and extremely rewarding. Children truly demonstrate the resilience of the human spirit. What I love most about my job is having relationships with children and seeing them grow; it is a wonderful experience. I primarily see patients who have a variety of rare bleeding and clotting disorders. I see both older and younger patients and also provide help when patients need to transition to and away from blood thinners. Doctors usually refer patients to me. I try to work with each patient so they understand why they are seeing me and what is going on with their body. I enjoy when a patient can leave my office with a complete understanding of what is going on and what they need to do to get better. As a young child, I had bad allergies and spent much time in the doctor’s office. As a frequent patient, I enjoyed spending time around medicine. As I entered college, I found that I enjoyed chemistry and that hematology allowed me to combine lab work with patient care. What is the definition of Sickle Cell Disease?

Sickle cell anemia (HbSS) is a genetic blood disorder that is the most common, severe type of sickle cell disease, in which the red blood cells, instead of being flexible and round, are rigid, sticky, and shaped like sickles or crescent moons (C-shaped). This rigidity and stickiness of red blood cells makes the hemoglobin in the cells carry less oxygen and get stuck in small blood vessels, while slowing or blocking blood and oxygen to the body tissues. Sickle cells additionally die early, causing a chronic shortage of red blood cells. When sickle cells get stuck in small blood vessels, they can cause pain, infection, acute chest syndrome, and stroke. In the United States, sickle cell anemia occurs most frequently in African Americans and Hispanic Americans.

When should I see a Sickle Cell Disease doctor near Chapel Hill, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Sickle Cell Disease doctor near Chapel Hill, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Sickle Cell Disease doctors near Chapel Hill, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Sickle Cell Disease doctors near Chapel Hill, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Sickle Cell Disease doctor near Chapel Hill, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Sickle Cell Disease doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Sickle Cell Disease doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Sickle Cell Disease doctor near Chapel Hill, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Sickle Cell Disease doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Sickle Cell Disease doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Sickle Cell Disease doctors near Chapel Hill, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Sickle Cell Disease doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Sickle Cell Disease doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Sickle Cell Disease doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
